DEAR GUEST ,

As Mayor of Ittoqqortoormiit , it is an honour for me to welcome you to our community.

The Danish name of the town is Scoresbysund , named after the English Whaler , William Scoresby , who as the first  mapped our area in 1822.

Our town was founded in 1925 on Ejnar Mikkelsens initiative. The foundation was partly a counterbalance to Norway’s growing interests in Northeast Greenland. But also it was an attempt to create better conditions of life for inhabitants from Ammassalik, by moving them to a new and in general better area for hunting .

The municipality of Ittoqqortoormiit - the Greenlandic name which means "the place with the big houses" -is one of the smallest populations in Greenland , but still it is the third biggest municipality area in Greenland.
North of our community is the worlds biggest National park , which not only contains a living wildlife , but also is a very important area for international scientists.
In the nearest future , we will see a development of both this scientifical interest and a growing expedition industry . We hope that our community will become a central starting point for this – for both the best of visitors , the community and the National Park .
Today , our community is one of the last hunters societies in the world , which for many of the hunters means a combined life with both hunting and tourism . Our community offers both dog sled trips , trophy hunting and sailing trips in the worlds biggest fjord system , the Scoresbysund Fjord .

To me , Ittoqqortoormiit is the most wonderful and unique society in Greenland . I am proud to offer the visitor a glimps of our lives in the very centre of the most beautiful surroundings you can imagine . If you seek the true experience , you will find it here .

At this website , you’ll find introductions , professional descriptions and personal stories from the East coast . I hope you will enjoy it !
