Hunting and, to some degree fishing are the main trades of the area. Every part of the animal is used. The meat is naturally used as food for both people and dogs, sealskins are used for bags, cosies, cussions etc. Buying COZY products is a way of supporting the traditional life of the Greenlanders.
Five species of seal live in the seas off Greenland. The ringed seal, The common seal, The harp seal, The hooded seal and the bearded seal. None of these species are threatened with extinction and hunting for adult seals is the only form of sealing allowed.

The first contact I had with Ittoqqortoormiit was because I had a tea cosy for Christmas from Ittoqqortoormiit. I fell in love with the cosies of sealskin. They are pretty and practical, and keep your coffee and tea steaming hot!
Ever since I first introduced traditional sealskin products from Ittoqqortoormiit together with the exciting COZY design the demand and interest in the Greenlandic story is growing day by day.
Our success with COZY is based on the history of Ittoqqortoormiit and Greenland. In fact we have been so successful in selling our products from this area that we are now about to enter export markets while we keep our focus on Greenland.
The idea is to base our business on fair trade and to create growth in Greenland, particularly Ittoqqortoormiit. This we will do by creating more jobs in the area and to out-source to other workrooms on the East coast of Greenland.
The media in Denmark and Greenland are very interested in the COZY adventure. The story about Ittoqqortoormiit and Greenland sells and we are happy to help bringing Ittoqqortoormiit into focus.
Programme for unemployed women bears fruit.
There are 4 unemployed women working at the activity house for women. They are producing a variety of sealskin products and in Ittoqqortoormiit you can buy their products in the activity house. Since spring the women have been producing COZY products too. This relationship between COZY and Ittoqqortoormiit began about 7 months ago. The 4 women working at the activity house in Ittoqqortoormiit are all very satisfied with the attention they get throught COZY and the media. However, for this project to be a success for these women as well we need to find a leader, someone who can guide them throught their everyday life at the work room and answer their questions. Perhaps, there might even be a possibility for one or two of the women to attend a design course. Presently, we are looking for 5 Home sewers from Ittoqqortoormiit, who can do the sewing in their homes.
