The Ammassalik area is a paradise of unspoiled nature and miraculous mountains offering countless opportunities for all levels of hiking and trekking.
A number of day trips can be made from Tasiilaq through a lush valley of Arctic flowers, or to a nearby peak with a glorious view of the Atlantic Ocean with it’s huge icebergs from the icecap of Greenland and ice floes from the North Pole.
A hiking trip can be planned for anywhere between a few days to a few weeks. For longer trips logistics support such as moving your equipment and provisions can be arranged locally. Base camps from where you can make day trips can also be found for different levels of activities. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots, as the land is often eroded. There is need to be careful of loose rocks and boulders.
The following areas are examples of the many possibilities.

The Valley of Flowers
The stroll through the Valley of Flowers begins right from the middle of town, following the river upstream. It is a relaxing hike that will take you through a valley lush with green and flowers, with butterflies fluttering by. There are a number of lakes up the valley at which you may relax or explore. You can follow a path that circles the lakes or climb up to a nearby peak to enjoy the view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Ammassalik Island
The town of Tasiilaq is situated near the southern end of Ammassalik Island, which is about 40km long and 30km wide. The island has glaciers, fjords, peaks and valleys - an ideal place to explore and experience the Arctic scenery. The highest peaks of the island over 1300m are in a steep mountain range near the northeast corner of the island. Most peaks are around 1000m or lower, with a variation of easily accessible peaks and others that are more challenging to climb.
Day trips from Tasiilaq can be made to various lakes and peaks. Rivers, waterfalls, and many beautiful flowers can be enjoyed on the way. With luck, you may see some arctic fox or ptarmigan. In late summer, salmon go up the rivers.¹ A hiking trip across the island will give you a truly unforgettable experience of the Arctic flora, icebergs and glaciers. In the center of the Island there are some huts if you prefer ² but we recommend camping with a tent, as this will enhance your experience of being embraced by the beautiful nature.
Transfer of your equipment by boat can be arranged if you wish to travel light. Pick-ups by boats can also be arranged, which will be an exceptional experience of seeing the icebergs close by.

¹ If you are interested in fishing, a fishing license can be acquired at the post office.
² Huts can be booked at the tourist office, and the key will be handed to you. There is also an  unlocked shelter that can be used in case of emergency.
White gas (Heptane) can be bought at the service station in Tasiilaq and Isortoq. 5 liters of white gas: 105 DKK.

Around Kuummiut
Kummiut is the largest settlement in the area next to the town of Tasiilaq, with a population of 400. The people live mostly on fishing and hunting, and you will have a glimpse of the life in one of Ammassalik’s settlements - a mixture of modern and old  houses, motor boats, dogsleds and a more traditional lifestyle. A trip from Kummiut will take you into a landscape of glaciers surrounding you, huge icebergs, and possibly vast icepacks almost blocking the fjords. The mountains are higher and steeper in this area, reaching 2000m. East Greenland is famed for its spectacular mountains and here you will get a glimpse of some of the majestic peaks.

A trek through the valley to the Midgaard Glacier will take you to an enormous glacier front releasing icebergs into the fjord. Trekking trips for several days to a few weeks can be planned, according to your schedule and experience. A combination with local boat transfer will enable groups with less experience or shorter schedules to enjoy the highlights. For those interested in higher peaks, the Tasiilaq Mountian Hut near the Karale Glacier is a good base for exploring peaks and glaciers. Transfer to and from your destination by boat and/or helicopter should be arranged.
