The weather is always changeable in the Scoresby Sund region. Cold winds and low temperatures, fog, snowstorms and blizzards occur, but can help to make any expedition challenging and a more”natural” experience. All trips can be changed with short notice due to weather & conditions .
However our clients are advised to be appropriately dressed on their arrival. Clothes suitable for winter in the higher elevations of northern Europe or America are adequate during the stay in the village and for excursions in the summer.
The best clothing approach is through the concept of “layers”. This includes several warm “thermo” under-ware, woollen socks, mittens (rather than cloves) and a woollen cap. The parka should have a wind proof shell and a hood.
Footwear should be good quality hiking and/or rubber boots. It is best to adopt the principle to shed a layer or take off a garment if it becomes too warm, rather than to suffer from the lack of clothing. Nanu Travel will supply specialized outer clothes and footwear depending on the season and/or nature of your itinerary.
Due to the northerly latitude, Ittoqqortoormiit has midnight sun from late May to late July with 24 hour daylight. However the sun does not rise above the horizon from late November until mid-January, with extremely short daylight conditions during this period.
Nanu Travel has its office in “downtown” Ittoqqortoormiit. The village has a general store and a post office where you can exchange foreign currency .
There is no restaurant in the village, but the guesthouse has a kitchen where guests can prepare their own meals. Your GSM cellular phone will work in the village and its immediate vicinity. There is a church service (Lutheran) almost every Sunday morning.
